Microbiology Supervisor
Job Description: As the Microbiology Supervisor, you will oversee staff and manage various testing processes, including in-process and finished product testing, as well as fermentation seed culture preparation and testing within the QC department. You will serve as a technical expert with extensive knowledge of aseptic procedures. Additionally, you will optimize the use of employees, equipment, and materials within budgetary constraints while maintaining high-quality technical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interview, hire, train, and assess staff competency.
- Plan, schedule, and monitor workflow to achieve goals.
- Provide staff development, performance reviews, and corrective counseling.
- Manage daily testing schedules and review internal lab data for accuracy.
- Lead laboratory investigations and ensure compliance with GLP as Study Director.
- Ensure regulatory compliance through audits, documentation, and corrective actions.
- Perform Quality Manager duties in their absence and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Train personnel on QMS activities and ensure the competence of laboratory staff.
- Oversee equipment calibration and maintenance programs.
- Initiate investigations and corrective/preventive actions for nonconforming work.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Serve as a subject matter expert for aseptic procedures and microbial identification.
- Procure supplies and equipment within budget to maximize efficiency.
- Provide technical oversight for problem-solving and process improvements.
- Lead testing/troubleshooting to maintain workflow and participate in lab meetings.
- Ensure compliance with department and company policies and procedures.
- Monitor progress towards quality assurance, control, and improvement goals.
- Interact with internal/external customers for proper sample handling and reporting.
- Contribute to updating procedures and test methods to reflect current practices.
- Participate in supervisory skills training and perform other tasks as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- BA/BS in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field; 5+ years of relevant experience.
- 2-3 years of supervisory experience, including managing direct reports.
- Proven leadership skills in coaching, mentoring, and developing talent.
- Strong supervisory and leadership abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal communication, public speaking, and writing skills; ability to build relationships essential for program success.
- Ability to analyze statistics, identify trends, and perform cost/benefit analysis for efficient resource allocation.
- Experience or knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is beneficial.
- Proficiency in Good Aseptic Technique.
- Understanding of bacterial-based assays.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
